Position Summary

The College of Engineering & Science at the University of Detroit Mercy is seeking a student-centered Cooperative Education and Employer Relations Coordinator to support our Engineering and Computer Science students in securing co-op employment opportunities and meaningful career paths upon graduation. This role is essential in guiding and coaching students through their career journey, from orientation and coaching to on-going mentoring and employer engagement, ensuring successful co-op experiences and career readiness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Co-op Program Management
  • Develop communication strategies and processes to assist students in securing co-op assignments.
  • Manage co-op courses and coordinate with the University Career Center to develop career resources.
  • Orient students to Co-op and Career Services through the Introduction to Co-op course.
  • Organize and execute networking and career-oriented events in coordination with the University Career Center.
  • Review and approve co-op opportunities, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Review portfolios and presentations for experiential substitution for co-op.

Career Development Coaching and Support:
  • Provide one-on-one and group career coaching to students.
  • Support students in preparing resumes, cover letters, and applications for co-op positions.
  • Conduct mock interviews and provide feedback to improve interviewing skills.
  • Provide information on industry trends, job market conditions, and employer expectations.
  • Work with Alumni Affairs to offer networking and mentoring activities.

Evaluation, Compliance, and Documentation:
  • Ensure offer letters are received for all co-op students and prepare reports on employment information.
  • Track and report on student registration and completion of co-op requirements.
  • Conduct site visits and surveys, and contact co-op supervisors for feedback.
  • Maintain accurate student and employer records for institutional compliance and accreditation.

Employer and Alumni Relations:
  • Expand and maintain relationships with employers to secure co-op placements.
  • Organize events that connect students with potential employers, alumni, and industry professionals.
  • Engage with alumni to create mentorship opportunities and gain career pathway insights for current students.
  • Identify opportunities for industry sponsorships and custom corporate education.

Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: A college degree.
  • Employment: Two to five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Career development experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 2+ years of experience in university-industry engagement and/or relations.
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering-related industries.
  • Experience in mentoring and advising college students.
  • Strong technical communication and data skills, including proficiency in Excel and other technologies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a college or work setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Attention to detail in providing supportive feedback to students.
  • Empathy and culturally sensitive mentoring and advising.
  • Strong communication skills in multiple modalities.
  • Growth mindset.
  • Project management skills and ability to initiate and follow through on projects.
  • Ability to offer insights for improving operational efficiency.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light objects (1 to 10 pounds) occasionally.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Salary/Pay Information

Commensurate with experience

Anticipated Schedule

Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on-campus
