The Georgetown University Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) connects people affected by mass incarceration with opportunities to shape their own futures. In prisons, in our local communities, and on campus, PJI aims to empower currently and formerly incarcerated people as scholars, leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and advocates. Grounded in Georgetown's commitment to social justice, PJI also serves to engage the wider university community in understanding the causes and responding to the consequences of mass incarceration, one of the most pressing crises of our time. Through transformational liberal arts courses, incarcerated scholars expand their thinking, engage with their peers, challenge themselves academically, and build their self-confidence. PJI's mission is to empower currently and formerly incarcerated people by providing access to education and employment and by advocating for just outcomes in the legal system.

The Site Coordinator: Patuxent Institution is initially a one-year term position in the Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences. They will provide essential on-site support for the daily operations of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree program at the Patuxent Institution in Maryland. Additional duties include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinate and facilitate on-site operations at the Patuxent Institution related to the BLA program including classes and classroom support (including classroom technology and faculty and student printing), lecture series events, materials/supplies/books, required student forms, movement/escorting faculty, staff, and students, and more.
  • Facilitate the sharing of information between PJI/Georgetown and Patuxent Administration and staff, DPSCS education department, and BLA students, and maintaining excellent professional relationships with all parties
  • Manage research assistance for BLA students by GU undergraduate student volunteers
  • Coordinate and facilitate admissions and course evaluation processes for BLA students and faculty.


Work Interactions

The Site Coordinator at Patuxent Institution for the BLA Program in PJI will report directly to the Associate Director for the BLA. This position will also work closely with the Director of Education as well as the Administrative Coordinator for Prison Education at PJI. The SC provides vital on-site program support to faculty, TAs, and students. The PSC establishes and maintains a good working relationship and communication with PJI staff, faculty, students, and affiliates as well as MD DPSCS and Patuxent Institution administrative and correctional staff.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma and 2+ years work experience required, Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Must not currently be under post-conviction supervision (i.e. parole, probation, etc.)
  • Must be able to acquire clearance to enter and work inside Patuxent Institution (a MD correctional facility)
  • Must have reliable transportation to both Patuxent Institution (Jessup, MD) and PJI office (Chinatown, DC)
  • Experience with prisons and/or prison education programs
  • Strong problem solving and diagnostic skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and willingness to assist others with limited technical skills and educational backgrounds
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple competing priorities/projects
  • Knowledge or experience with DOC regulations, policies, and procedures (particularly in MD) preferred
  • Experience working in prison education preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$20.16 - $31.30

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
